@gameofthroneshistorian: Replying to @Lizzie Can a King release a brother of the Watch? #asoiaf #gameofthrones #ironthrone #nightswatch #asongoficeandfire
I imagine the king can order them to leave and if they do simply pardon their desertion

The king can pardon whoever they want however.

Robb wants to trade men for Jon in the books. Implies that he knows he can’t just say I’m the king, he has to negotiate!

The problem w the watch is that they can’t find good men like Jon who would actually listen to the vows and serve the realm which is worth more then the men who don’t have the heart for it

The problem with the idea of a king releasing soomeone, is that, if done on time of rebelion, nothing stop a claimant to use the NightnWatch as a private army with the promise of realing they oaths (Something that had happens in real life on institution with similar conditions). Thats why, i belive that Stannis promising that, is a show of how he demeanor of Just or Legal, is only a proyection of the idea that he is the law, a proyection of narcissism and no truly justice o legalities

What's so interesting about Stannis is that had Jon accepted his offer, his tittle would be hollow. I mean, no one in the north would respect his lordship and the relationship between the Starks and the Brotherhood of the Knight Watch would would suffer terribly

I think the crown would be within rights to pull someone from the Watch especially if they're a volunteer and noble. Avoiding a civil war by pulling the last member of a house from the watch as opposed to conflict between houses, that kind of thing. Similar to releasing someone from their Kingsguard vow, could happen, would raise eyebrows, but possible.

The Nights Watch does NOT answer to the Throne! There would be consequences to refusing them, to be sure, but there is no legal obligation to obey! If you send someone to the wall to evade the King’s Justice, that puts them beyond the reach of the King’s Command.

Wasn’t Robb considering paying the Watch to allow Jon to leave & become Robb’s official heir?

I figured the king could release anyone from their vows night, kings guard and the sisters, but they need to serve some higher purpose etc Tywin would do it for his family and as bargaining chips

Kings, queens, lords, and noble men have no jurisdiction within the knights watch.

This is what annoted me most about Locke's plan in the show. Like, what the hell was he thinking his endgame was going to be? How was he planning on going back to Bolton for his reward when he'd said the vows? Caveat, I don't actually remember how his story ended, but I'm rewatching it now and have gotten to the part where he joins Jon's mission to Craster's Keep, so this may actually be addressed later and I'm misremembering 😅
