This is VERY tricky. Autism needs to be unpacked based on when it was diagnosed and the symptoms of the individual. A lot of high functioning autistic people had an attachment/emotional enmeshment issue very early in life. Autism is a neurological difference…. But how it manifests and “solidifies” into “innate” traits is environment specific. (Yes, to some degree the mother plays a role, I’m sorry, but it’s true). The longer they have been diagnosed as autistic the harder it will be to “correct” the incorrect treatment. This is the problem with mental health treatment in general. When a provider adds to the issues a new provider has to unlearn LAYERS of incorrect treatment. It’s a HUGE mess…. I think about people who’ve been diagnosed with bipolar or schizophrenia for a decade plus and I wince at what it would take to course correct that damage (both with medicine AND mental/behaviorally… it’s the same with any chronic condition that has become rooted into the person’s body/mind/neuro-system).

This already feels emotionally freeing. And I have yet to take any action.

So does this ultimately come down to shared values? I’m particularly interested in what you said about avoidance vs emotional neglect!
