Analytical vs intuitive is odd for me. It sounds more like Jung’s rational vs irrational. Except for Jung rational = Thinking vs feeling and irrational = Sensing vs intuition. As an INTP, cognitively I am an intuitive thinker, I lead with both thinking & intuition. And there are also intuitive feelers. In jungian cognition feeling is a rational function of the mind.

It's the first example from Kahneman's book, but I doubt now that if that experiment (with ivy league students) were repeated, it would lead to similar results. I now think he oversimplified intuition and assimilated with biased cognition which is only half of the story. the other side is right intuitions which are vital brain shortcuts which keep us alive.

I'm an intuitive thinker but now agnostic atheist. I was a fundamentalist before this. So maybe I'm some kind of mix? I definitely don't judge truth based on my feelings, but I'm not analytic enough for analytical philosophy or complex theology.

Are we discovering eternal truths of mathematics or, perhaps, exploring the creative limits of our human minds?

if I remember right, the exercise you referenced came from the book, "Think Fast and Slow." In another example, if a lake starts off with one lily pad and the number of lily pads doubles daily, taking 48 days to cover the lake, how many days would it have taken to cover half the lake? From my perspective, intuitive / fast thinking has benefits, but you're more likely to get the right answer with analytical / slow thinking.

Except 10 cents is just wrong though. I agree that intuition is a form of intelligence but this seems like a bad example because it makes it sound like both styles are equally valid/intelligent, when only one of the answers is actually correct.

But your example shows that the intuitive response is incorrect.

I feel like intuitive thinking is just the first step in the process. If intuitively someone thinks 10 cents, shouldn’t they understand why that’s not correct once it’s been explained?

I dont understand why anyone would say 10c as $1 more would make the total 1.20. What am I missing?
