I think you might consider adding that design is an iterative process. I'm not painting my walls until I know what other finishes I'm using. I'm not choosing furniture based on wall color, either.

OK, I did this in the right order but I feel pretty stuck at lighting. I’m starting to understand you’re supposed to layer your lighting on all of our lighting right now comes from cans in the ceiling. I’m starting to think this is the reason it doesn’t yet feel cozy or finished.

100 year old bungalow, dimmable can lighting added by previous owner, can't pinpoint why but I hate it. Can't afford to rewire to change right now. suggestions for working with it for a few years?

The only thing we do differently is we usually do paint almost last, after rugs, furniture, fabrics, tile etc. because those things usually have a narrower set of color options and we have way more control to dial color precisely to work with them with paint. We’ll have color in mind of course, but we try to wait on final paint approvals as long as we can get away it with the contractor.

I am so on board for this. When I was in my late twenties we bought a house. I went out and bought a lot of furniture. Then paint, then a couple of rugs. What a mess. Had to live with most of it too bc I couldn’t afford to change anything except paint. But I made the wrong colour choice again and I lived with it for four years until I couldn’t take it anymore. Now, 20 years later I’ve finally got it right. I love my abode. But I’m ready to change some things.
