You do not need boiling water. Room temp tap water will soften them in less than an hour. Been doing this for years

Also to prevent an avocado from over ripening if you aren’t going to use for a few days, just put it in your fridge covered in cold water. I usually throw it in a mason jar. I once left one like that for 30 days and it was still perfect.

You can buy unripened avocados, keep them in your fridge & if you know you're going to use them the next day, take them out & sit them in your turned off oven overnight & they'll be ripe in the morning. I don't know the science behind it but it works every time.
