Our transmission shop was established in 1958 and we do warranty work for 7 local GM dealers and we see a lot of 8L90E's.1) Flush the ATF through the lines.2) Drop the pan replace filter. 80 % of the fluid is now out. 3) Fill with Mobil LV ATF but mix in 1 container of GM limited slip additive. If the TCM is NOT locked an HP Tumer can program the TCC application to 7th gear. The shudder will disappear.

I've ben told by every transmission guy ever. if it aint broke dont fix it. if the fluid hasn't been change before 100k miles leave it alone. Just replace the filter and add fluid.

Drop the pan , wash out and install a new filter and gasket. Put in a good fluid and add a additive and shutter fix

I just put 2 bottles of Lucas in mine when it started doing this at 80k miles and as of right now I'm sitting at 238k and the problem hasn't came back plus I tow way more than I should.

Our 2017 had the same symptoms, I changed the oil to the Mobil lv atf hp synthetic and filter and it solved the shutter. Wasn’t the nicest to have to do but it worked for me.

we started noticing a shutter shifting between first and second in our 2013 Toyota rav4. We had the transmission flushed and the fluid looked fine and the pan and filter didn't show excessive debris. immediately we noticed it seemed to help but now the issue seems to have completely disappeared.

If its high mileage or showed debris in the pan, i wouldn’t flush but I would do a drain and fill.

was told by gm tech, if the 8 speed has a converter issue, replace torque converter and valve body to truly fix it.

My 8l90 was shuttering at 180k. I pulled the pan, changed the filter, fluid, and added anti shudder additive. Worked for me.

As a gm transmission tech it all depends on mileage, service history, and if there are any other concerns. if the transmission is under 100k miles but over 60k its a hard spot to be in especially if they've never serviced the unit prior. if its just a shudder, no shifting flares, slipping, stuttering, jumping, harsh shifts a torque converter replacement and a flush with a new filter will normally solve the problem. the issue gets into sometimes these shudders go unnoticed until its too late. sending the clutch material through the unit causes so many problems and can even cause premature wear on the clutch disks leaving burnt spots and delamanination. vehicles over 100k is when it gets bad, you have to look at it a certain way, a gm transmission from gm comes with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty if you put a torque converter in it for let's say $2000 parts and labor, roughly, then the clutches internally which may habe been damaged let go they now need an overhaul or a replacement. this issue is not just in the 8 speeds it crosses over to the 6 speeds as well. its a hard discussion to have with a customer to explain that the transmission has over 100k miles on it we cant guarantee a torque converter will fix all the problems or extend the life of the transmission by a significant amount of time. the best option is to service it as regularly as possible to keep an eye on it. I believe gm says every 50k to flush it but I've seen units come in at 46k with a shudder amd need an overall. the safe place to be is servicing it every 30k.

Every transmission I have ever flushed went completely out within a few hundred miles I would just drive till it drops or rebuild or change transmission

I fully service my trans yearly, have it down to a science. Zero failures, butter shifting. Extreme milage on all my gear, will never ever do it any other way.

My dad was a designer at Borg Warner years ago. He's long passed. He always said: don't flush. Drain an refill a few times. Change filter, but never flush.

We never recommend flushing whether there are issues or not, flushing can create issues.... Regular fluid and filter changes are the way to go. 8l90's requires the updated fluid, that typically corrects the TCC shudder.

Okay, I know this is not a popular opinion.. I rebuilt transmissions and differentials for the last 20 years. Manual transmissions. A very good friend of mine rebuilds automatics. Has been doing it even longer. His logic is if there's no issue with the transmission. And you have well over hundred thousand miles, do not change it.Because the new oil has detergents that can break down.What clutch material you have left.
