Iran’s highest-ranking political and religious leaders mourned the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Friday, during a state memorial ceremony in Tehran. Not in attendance was his son, Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who is believed to have been seriously injured in the joint U.S.-Israeli strikes in late February that killed his father and many family members. Mojtaba has not been seen or heard from publicly since taking control of the country. The funeral comes four months after the fatal strikes, with Iranian leaders postponing major public ceremonies over fears that the U.S. and Israel would target additional top leadership. Coffins carrying the bodies of Khamenei, who ruled for 37 years, and several members of his family were displayed in Tehran ahead of funeral processions expected to draw millions of Iranians between July 4 and July 9. Senior Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, welcomed foreign delegations attending the memorial ceremony at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla Mosque. China, Russia, and India are among the countries sending representatives. The state memorial marks the beginning of a week of nationwide mourning. Ceremonies will continue in Tehran through July 5 and 6. Funeral rites will then move to the holy city of Qom before continuing to Iraq on the 8th, where ceremonies are planned in Baghdad, Najaf, and Karbala.
