The condo complex I lived in was so transparent with the money. Sent out a newsletter once a month with what standing maintenance fees were covered as well as a timeline of future projects like paving, deck repair, chimney inspections, etc. Our HOA was headed by a retired lawyer and accountant. It can absolutely be a fantastic thing if done right.

I live in HOA for 22 years now in California. We currently pay $139/month. We get free high speed internet, four pools, and a full sized gym and an I door basketball court.

Paid 580k for my condo in San Diego, sure it’s probably “normal” for San Diego, but my HOA suckssssss and has gone up 3 times in 1.5 years with nothing to show. I regret this decision SO much. However, thankful for the tax benefits because I haven’t owed the IRS more money in the last 2 years with such a high interest rate and property taxes. It’s such a shitty system! 😭

My HOA fees went up 7 times in 10 years, on the 10 year I had enough and finally sold! I was shocked at the ever increasing HOA cost, while the benefits continued to drop!

Everybody warns about overbearing HOAs. They ran by owners volunteers and there are laws for transparency so you can definitely get all this information. You should apply to be on the board if you want to say in decisions, policies and accounts.

HOA is homeowners. When you buy a condo you need to really look over the reserve study and the percentage that they are funded. If it’s under 70 percent pay attn to the study. Sounds like your agent didn’t do this
