Christ sleeps on the stone after forty days in the wilderness, calm and exposed. Above him, Satan crouches in the darkness, crowned with fire, watching in silence. Sir Joseph Noel Paton does not paint the temptation itself. He paints the moment before it, when temptation studies its chance. Satan’s hand at his chin feels like calculation, not rage. He holds the spear, but does not raise it. That is what makes this famous painting so disturbing. Temptation does not always arrive loudly.
