The Siege of Leningrad became one of the longest and most destructive ordeals of the Second World War. From September 1941 to January 1944, military operations, starvation, bombardment, logistics, and civilian endurance became inseparable as German forces tried to isolate one of the Soviet Union’s most important cities. Operation Barbarossa brought Army Group North toward Leningrad with extraordinary speed. Field Marshal Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb drove through the Baltic region while Finnish forces advanced from the north. By early September German troops had reached the city. The capture of Shlisselburg on 8 September severed Leningrad’s last major land connection with the Soviet interior, establishing the blockade represented by Leeb’s early entry in the image. The Soviet command was already in crisis. Kliment Voroshilov had directed the defense during the German approach, but Georgy Zhukov arrived in September to replace him as commander of the Leningrad Front. His immediate task was to stabilize the defenses and prevent a direct breakthrough. Soviet resistance stiffened and the German attempt to take Leningrad rapidly failed. A railway was rapidly built through it, substantially improving the city’s connection with the Soviet rear.
