Is this heat used for anything or is it just dumped?

You're running similar kit to us. We have 3x 175kw C9s & 2x 3516 mains, great to see your content

Is it always running at 80% or just every so often?

Crazy to me why they wouldn’t use variable field current to reduce/control output

i know gensets are happiest at a set high load, but never knew this was a thing :) i am a ship engineer myself, and we have massive gens running with no load a lot of the time..

Shame they can't store excess, I'm guessing it isn't realistic to store that much energy.

Interesting, thank you. We have loadbanks for buildings although only to test what the genset can handle. We run some FG Wilson gens on only 30% for monthly testing.

What a waste, bad technology if you have to burn fuel to make energy that will be dumped in the sea.

Real Brian Louden :
Seems wasteful… isn’t. To not ‘wet stack’ a diesel and created damage/gunk that can extremely wasteful or damaging earl you want it near 80% load. You can fire up more generators for more load but when you are down to one the hotel/house load of sitting doing nothing may be half that. It pays in the end to dump (or sometimes use) that as waste even though it is burning more fuel than running lower.
