The part of an ED the media doesn’t show you. We’ve become so accustomed to seeing extreme thinness, emaciated bodies, protruding bones, “ED aesthetics,” and dangerously low weights portrayed as something beautiful, desirable, or even aspirational. But the media rarely shows you what can exist on the other side of that image. It doesn’t show you the person who needs a walker at a young age, because their body has become too weak to safely walk on their own some days. It doesn’t show you the shower chair because standing through an entire shower has become too physically exhausting. It doesn’t show you the bed wedge needed to elevate swollen legs because of severe edema. It doesn’t show you the air-pressure pad on the bed because your spine and tailbone hurt so badly from spending prolonged periods in bed that even lying down can be painful. It doesn’t show you relying heavily on Ensure and other nutritional support because your body desperately needs nourishment and getting enough nutrition through regular meals can be incredibly difficult. It doesn’t show you how cold you can become when your body no longer has adequate insulation or energy to maintain its temperature. It doesn’t show you the weakness. The exhaustion. The loss of muscle. The loss of independence. The pain. The medical equipment. The fear. The days when your own body can’t reliably carry you anymore. This is the reality that can exist behind the image people are taught to admire. An emaciated body isn’t a trophy. A dangerously low weight isn’t an achievement. Visible bones aren’t proof that someone is “better” at an eating disorder. They can be signs of a body that is running out of resources to keep itself functioning. And I think we need to stop showing the aesthetic of severe ED’s without showing the consequences that can come with it. Because when someone is only shown the thinness, they don’t see the price. This is the price. I am choosing to share these incredubly hard parts of my current life, because someone scrolling through their feed right now might be looking at an emaciated body and thinking, I want to look like that. And I want them to know: You don’t want this illness. You want the feeling you think it will give you. The illness can take so much more than your weight. It can take your strength. Your independence. Your mobility. Your comfort. Your life. The media showed you the body. I’m showing you the consequences. 🤍 Off topic: but this song playing is dedicated to my dad. #recovery #recoveryjourney #recoveryisworthit #recoveringoutloud #recovering
