Your opening face has me cacklinggggg bc that is my exact reaction trying to provide basic psychoeducation to people determined to misunderstand it & continue passing down generational trauma

I’ve been out of my parents house now longer than I was in it. I’ve supported myself and gotten nothing from them (financially, emotionally, anything) since 18 when I left. I promise there’s no codependency, I barely know them.

Can you talk more about what a healthy attachment looks like between parent and adult child? As someone who doesn't have a healthy attachment to my parents, and neither does my spouse, what is the future goal with our child? Its kinda easy to figure out the toddler stage, honestly, but I'm not too sure about the differentiation phase.

My mother was always my best friend. She was everybody’s best friend until the day I started to recognize how my childhood led to every single aspect of my adult life that I couldn’t cope with for lack of better language right this second and as soon as I started trying to talk to her about it, I suppose best friend she couldn’t manage. I was no longer worth looking at it all because she couldn’t look at how the neglect of herself led to the neglect of me and the neglect her neglect me led to my neglect of myself cause she needed me to keep not neglecting her… while I disappeared

How is it codependency if they have distance themselves and cut you off. It would be that if they maintained a close relationship with their parents. Not if they are estranged.

Sounds like my aunt I ended up enmeshed with. As a adult trying to untangle made it worse and made my ability to grow harder

No, they don’t. And many latch onto therapeutic terms in an effort to deflate the language their child uses an then flip it onto their child.

It’s been my experience that those that disliked their children as children, resented the work, the duty, the relating to babies and toddlers. Then feel incredible levels of entitlement as they become adults and want to be ‘paid’ back in effect for all those years of bare minimum care. They resented the responsibility of children but then expect their adult children to make up for it by making them the centre of their lives. Which is impossible

I get this a lot from my family 😂 the accusations about how I want their MONEYYYY $$$$ (they won’t stop sending gifts/cards/checks) and I’m clingy, but I also “abandoned” them… I’m a clingy bastard who left with my cold snake heart… my loner-co-dependent-introverted-attention-seeking-selfish-self-centered-arrogant-childish-independent-irresponsible… tushie 🥰

Not to mention the state of our economy. It’s like they continue to stifle our spirit and then blame us for still being around. WE WANT TO LEAVE and WE WANT PEACE

It’s anyone stuck in the old ways, who isn’t accountable to their actions or how they treat people, who think secure attachment is codependent. This comment you’re replying to is insanely common, more so then people acknowledging attachment theory. I know many people like this.
