@alicia.trautwein: An autistic woman was detained by ICE. Aliya Rahman is an autistic woman with a traumatic brain injury and a U.S. citizen. She was driving to a doctor’s appointment when she was detained by ICE. She was not protesting. She was not involved in any demonstration. She was trying to get medical care. What happened to her raises serious questions about how disabled people are treated during encounters with law enforcement and federal agents. Autism can affect how someone processes noise, chaos, and sudden commands, especially in high-stress situations. Confusion in those moments is not defiance. Many disabled people are taught to disclose their disabilities and trust that authorities will help. This case shows how badly that expectation can fail, and why there is no excuse for using force instead of support when someone is clearly overwhelmed and asking for help. This is a conversation we need to have, not just about Aliya Rahman, but about disability, power, and what safety is supposed to mean. #AutismAwareness #DisabilityRights #LearnOnTikTok #TikTokLearningCampaign

Alicia Trautwein :
If your brain needed extra time to process chaos and multiple commands, how would this have ended for you?

And people will continue to come up with reasons to excuse what ICE is doing. This is a travesty.

I am AuDHD. I can not process multiple people speaking, and it is even even worse with shouting.

we (autistic people) often struggle with auditory processing and verbal instructions.

Look, I’m neurotypical and I think I would have reacted in the same way she did. I can’t imagine the fear of being caught up in that melee when you are just trying to mind your own business and then having armed men shouting confusing and conflicting orders at you- all with the knowledge that a woman had just been unalived in her vehicle in a similar situation! The panic and fear would have been overwhelming to anyone! I was so disturbed when I saw the video and my heart broke for her.

I am also on the spectrum. That is terrifying we are slower at processing situations. We have no accommodations in the US.

As someone with Audhd and also a paramedic this is so tragic. Dont get me wrong we get ppl with incarceritis frequently but we assess them & transport them!! How are they getting away with this!? Where is the accountability??

An appt she most definitely waited months for ! Having a TBI & Autism means EVERY symptom is doubled. Having a TBI myself I can understand the overload & intense fear she experienced . I know i would have " short circuited" totally unable to process request. She also coupled with autism had to be absolutely petrified on top of everything else .

As an autistic person who also has a traumatic brain injury, this scares me. Am I next? Will my family lose me to ICE?

I am afraid of loud noises and my brain literally can’t process it when multiple people are talking at once. The result is an autistic ADHD meltdown or a shutdown snd not necessarily in that order. So right now is probably the most dangerous time in my life to be disabled in America.

I'm not trying to change the story but we have these issues with police too; however what ice is doing is extremely worse because of how they are approaching it without proper uniform and jurisdiction
