Ariel didn’t become human FOR Eric. Ariel became human BECAUSE she was tired of her Fathers OVER protective nature. Eric became the physical representation of freedom for her. Because it wasn’t until Triton came and destroyed her treasures that caused her to go over the edge and pursue Ursula. He became the KEY to freedom from a world she had grown so tired and felt she no longer had a place in. I think had triton let her head stay in the clouds.. she may actually never have left and eventually succumbed to her life under the sea. But the event of the film gave Ariel the courage to FINALLY break free since she felt she would rather embark on unknown land then settle another day unhappy
