problem is 500 tons is nothing. The average cargo ship carries 50,000 tons and the largest ships carry 400,000. you need 100 to replace one average ship. not practical.

Would we ever have enough helium for something like this? no material can hold the stuff indefinitely and once its out, it reaches escape velocity.
