"I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris knew it." That's Robert Downey Jr's actual Oscar speech. Nolan cast him after being struck by an old magazine cover of Downey, the same instinct that led him to picture Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer. What's wild is Downey almost passed, he'd been living inside the MCU machine for over a decade and wasn't sure he had a real performance left in him outside a suit of armor. Then he watched what Nolan and the crew were putting into this film and said it fundamentally changed how he approached acting again. The character itself is the trick. Lewis Strauss spends nearly two hours playing the reasonable, wounded man in the room, and Nolan shoots his entire timeline in black and white specifically because Strauss sees the world in black and white, certainty, grudges, no ambiguity. Then the third act flips the whole thing and reveals he orchestrated the takedown from the start. Downey has said in interviews that layering that quiet resentment under a likable surface for two hours straight was the hardest sustained work he's done in years. 31 years after his first Oscar nomination for Chaplin, he finally won for playing a man defined entirely by what he never got to be. Definitely one of the best performances of his career. Do you agree?
