Definitely find a local rancher that sells their cows :) they usually offer much better prices than a butcher, and sometimes cover the butcher costs but if not it’s still cheaper and better quality staying away from the stores. Some will offer 1/4, 1/2 or full cows and you can customize what cuts you want :)

Forget the butcher. Buy whole animals. Halves or quarters. Then you pay processing when you pick up. My cow came out to 6.60 per pound. But that was 6.6 for ground beef, AND the steaks and roasts. Steak at $6 a pound? Hell yeah.

Okay, I don't know where you live. But I thought the same thing about how much money it would cost, but it actually turned out to be cheaper at my local butcher. Yes, I have to drive like an hour to get there, but it doesn't matter. I don't really waste gas. I do other things there too. I get it cheaper than the stupid. Cheap a** grocery store. The grocery store is like $1819 a pound, and I go pay less than $5 a pound when it's on sale and 1299A pound when it's not on south. For porterhouses, for ribeyes, and if I wanted to eat chicken, they're locally sourced, and they're only a $50 a pound and same with the pork, I buy a live pork there because it's super friggin', cheap and they are locally a source as well, also. That beef is prime from a ranch in Texas. It is prime Angus so good and shockingly so much cheaper.

you can buy whole "chunks" of meat from Sam's or Costco if you have one close by. I got a chuck roll (17lb) and got 13 steaks, 3 roasts, stew meat, plus some out of it. buying a loin next for better steaks, but the Denver steaks from the chuck roll turned out great!
