Not because it is an obligation, but because it originated as a prayer of reverence and joy before the sacred. An Akathist is an extended hymn, composed with a very carefully crafted structure. Each part combines praise, gratitude, and petition, becoming a prayer that touches both the mind and the heart. The most well-known one is dedicated to the Mother of God, a text that has accompanied generations in moments of need and hope. But there are also Akathists to Christ, to the Holy Spirit, and to many saints venerated in the Orthodox tradition. What is beautiful is that an Akathist is not only “said”: it is lived.
