@louisianacrawfishco: This is the Faquetaique Courir de Mardi Gras! This isn’t the bead throwing Bourbon Street Mardi Gras most people know. This is the Faquetaique Courir de Mardi Gras, a traditional Cajun Mardi Gras run held out on the prairie near Eunice, Louisiana. At this Mardi Gras, everyone participates. There are no spectators, and all walks of life are welcome as long as you show up in full traditional costume: a handmade suit, a mask, and the tall pointed hat called a capuchon. One of the wildest traditions you’re seeing in this video is the greased pole chicken challenge. It’s unique to the Faquetaique Courir de Mardi Gras. A live chicken is placed in a small cage at the top of a tall greased pole, and the Mardi Gras runners work together, literally climbing over one another, to free it. The chicken represents the charity needed to make the communal feast at the end of the day. This style of Mardi Gras traces back to medieval French rural traditions brought to Louisiana by the Acadians, long before plastic beads ever existed. Instead of big floats and spectators, this is a fully immersive cultural ritual with Cajun music, costumes, dancing, and a whole lot of organized chaos, done with deep respect for the culture and the community that keeps it alive. If you’ve only ever seen New Orleans Mardi Gras… this is the other side of the story, the one still rooted in the countryside, spoken in Cajun French, and powered by everyone joining in together. Allons Mardi Gras!

FordPrefect :
the tradition was to go to a house, beg, owner says you can have a chicken but you have to catch it yourself. Chickens were called yard birds because they were free to roam
