@oliviaclairem: What are everyone’s thoughts on this because I want to raise kind thoughtful children, but I also don’t want them to not be able to hold their ground?! Have we got any good one liners we can teach them! #parenting #toddler #motherhood #advice #school
I don’t think it’s helpful to label a three year old as a bully. They’re all still working it out.

A preschool child can’t be a bully… pushing is normal developmental behaviour. Obviously it needs correcting, but I definitely wouldn’t say they were being a bully x

if your telling your child to push you can’t be mad at other children pushing

This is so hard as a boy mum I think! Desperately trying to find the balance of gentleness but also being walked all over

I tell my girl (3) to use a really big and firm voice and say STOP, I don’t like that, no thank you. But I tell her to say it aggressively 😂😅 seems to work. And then tell the teacher if needed

Children that age aren’t bullies, think it’s just little ones trying to communicate. I’m sure the parents have been told, but it’s up to the nursery really to handle and enforce kind hands 🙌

They are not allowed to push first but if someone pushes them they push back, or he will always be bullied. He needs to stand up for himself.

I encourage my daughter to tell the teacher and to tell the kid it’s not kind. She is 8 though 🤣

✨ Chloe & Eliza ✨ :
I get this a lot in my work but it’s quite difficult that children can bully someone at their level of maturity. I’m teaching Eliza that everyone is different. If someone is unkind to her or does something she doesn’t like she says “stop, I don’t like it”. If they repeat this behaviour then she is to inform an adult. All children have different things going on at home and are exposed to a lot (mainly through tv programmes too) - not that this is an excuse. I always want Eliza to be the bigger person and stay true to herself. I never want to her to hit back to defend herself, as that is not true to who she is and what we believe in.

I would never allow them to push. I tell them to say in their biggest voice and look at their eyes- do not push me

Mine is you use a firm voice and say don’t do that again. If they do it again you have free rain to push them back

Yes I will encourage my son to give it back as I have found you stand upto a bully they back off. I was walked all over in primary / high school and in college I changed, got sick of it and stood upto them and I actually then enjoyed education for the first time.

I was taught to be kind & never start an argument. BUT if anyone picks on you/treats you badly you have the last word & don’t EVER back down. Has done me so well in life to have that inner confidence

I wouldn’t call it bullying at 3 years old. My little boy is 2 and a half and is going through a pushing phase, he sees it as funny and a game it’s not through nastiness and anger. We of course tell him not too and explain why we don’t push etc but I would be devastated if he was labelled a bully

Teacher - don’t use the word bully, you tell them ‘stop’ ‘I don’t like that’ etc. and tell them to go and get an adult. They are too little to be dealing with this on their own

Always tell the teacher the child needs someone to explain that the behaviour isn’t ok. They may not know.

I teach an escalation ladder: a firm but kind “stop”, then a firm and loud “stop”, last rung on the ladder is to do it back but way harder so it ends.

Why would you encourage someone to respond in the same way that you don't like? At 3, you tell them to use their words and find an adult. 3 year olds aren't bullies but nor are they responsible for correcting others behaviours. Teach children how to verbalise their feelings and find an age appropriate way of solving the problem- in this case, telling an adult

I teach in a high school. Please don’t teach your loving, sweet natured boy to push back. The amount of kids I have seen turn in to bullied themselves because they are taught to push back as a result and can’t differentiate between bullying behaviour towards them and just being scared, these poor kids end up becoming bullies themselves. When I speak to them about it the reason is always the same ‘I push back so I’m not pushed around’. Speak to the teacher, they should have enough staff in that room that they are watching the behaviour of all of the children and are not allowing this to happen.

Teach them to say, "Stop, i dont like that" very firmly. if it continues on you can address it with the teacher.
There could be many factors at play here.
1/ the child could have an undiagnosed special needs like ADHD, Autism etc where social and sensory issues are more complicated and said child needs support to learn how to play appropriately.
2/ child could be a younger sibling and is used to rougher playing and thinks this is the norm.
3/ child could have had little socialising with other children and
unsure of appropriate behaviours.
Just tell beau to say Stop firmly I don't like it and if it continues you speak with the teacher and address things from there, she can keep a closer eye on it and yes encourage beau to let his teacher know that hes uncomfortable with being pushed.

I’d get him to push back if he gets sick of it. Purely because you’ve brought him up so kind he won’t just going around pushing everyone x

I teach my children to use a mixture of the two. First they are to say STOP I don't like that it's not kind.... if that doesn't work and someone is being physical then they can match it - but are never to be physical first.
I was always taught to tell the teacher and not figjt back and got walked over throughout school primary and secondary xx

We've tried all sorts, recently the only thing that worked was speaking direct to the parents. They were really understanding which I know isn't always the case, they talked to their kid, we agreed to do a playdate to smooth things over but it wasn't needed in the end and things are much better. Not as easy to do in pre-school, but tbh "telling the teacher" works just as well - the behaviours at this age sometimes need to be mediated by an adult so they can help them work through any "big feelings".
