Why not just leave the tail out when rewinding? It's pretty easy to tell on most older slr's and then you don't have to mess with all that

I’ve always just added one of those double-ended can openers to the dark bag toolkit. Use the blunt side to pry off the end of the canister, slide out the spool, and you’re ready to roll. Overly simple, but it works!

Hey, as you rewind the film in your camera, LISTEN. You can hear it pop off the winding sprocket. When that happens, STOP. Open the camera back, and there’s the leader. TADA. I just saved you from buying a tool you don’t need. 😎

what i do is i leave the film lead out when i rewind the film in camera i just press my ear to the back and wait for a small click that indicates the film is off of the pressure plate

I started using a strip of dummy film and wetting the back, once you slip the film in you can give it a fast pull and it will follow the film from the canister

I honestly hate those retrievers. I started just putting my whole loaded camera in to my dark bag, and just opening the back before I re-wind, so that I can feel with my finger when it’s done, but before the leader gets wound back in to the container. Then pulling all the film back out of the container, cutting it off at the end, and putting it in my dev tank from there.
