My mum used to check with us that nothing was happening that made us uncomfortable when we had to be home alone at night with our father (she was an emergency dept night shift nurse). Not for a minute did she actually suspect him, but she knew from experience (personal and work - the horrors inflicted on women & children) that it's the men with access and opportunity who are the greatest risk to children. We rarely slept over at others, but when we did she had to know the parents & talk to them & know who was going to be in the house - absolutely not if only a father, or teenage males. Obviously, in this, and in so many cases, a woman's presence does not stop them, but trying to minimise opportunity was her aim. She was born in 1935 and we were born mid to late 70's older mum in her 40's, forcontext.
