You are actually supposed to have 1 box per every cat and one extra. Also at least one on each floor of your house. Clay litter is best for most cats.

If you're bringing a cat into your house for the first time, know generally where they are and check around once an hour for the first few weeks. You wanna make sure they're not getting stuck, trapped, accidentally locked in a room, finding a way into the cleaning chemicals, or chewing wires. After a few weeks you can catproof all the places you want them to stay out of, because they're gonna show you new cracks they can slip through that you never even noticed or knew about
