My brother has marfans syndrome. He is very tall and lanky. Long fingers and toes. Textbook symptoms. He had an aortic dissection at 23. He will be 41 next month. Scariest thing I’ve ever experienced as a nurse!! And I’ve been a nurse for 24 years.

I remember mitral valve prolapse (MVP) in marfans patients because they’re tall/long limbs and marfans pts would be MVP of the basketball team

As a chronic illness patient that's also in healthcare, the fact that you found something you didn't know and immediately educated yourself on it indicates that you'll be a great provider.

Just wait till you learn about the EDS trifecta.. Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (there’s 13 different subtypes) , MCAS and dysautonomia. It’s not fun and we get gaslit terribly

As a Pedi OR nurse how did she not get a pectus bar when she was a teenager???? I appreciate all the info you gave super helpful, but this is what I’m stuck on. A pectus bar is the easiest way to correct the pectus excavatum, and a Shriner surgeon can do it for those that are going to say maybe she couldn’t afford it.

As an NP. I can tell you it’s humbling the things you learn DAILY. Give yourself time. You’ll get it

Never stop these. This was very helpful. You should consider keeping this going after you graduate.

I’d highly recommend becoming familiar with EDS. It’s much more common than we used to believe and wrecks havoc on the body when undiagnosed

Also - I found this extremely interesting and helpful. Your teaching and explaining style is exactly how I learn best. The cadence of this was perfect.

Except for the height a lot of marfans symptoms are similar to Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Very few doctors know about that as well. That’s why I didn’t get diagnosed until 40 and I had to do 80% of the research to give to my dr to finally get my diagnosis.

I was taught about Marfans and how to spot it in paramedic class in the 90s. I’d honestly spend a lot of time looking into to ehlers danlos and the different variations. It’s more common than previously thought.

Nobody knows everything, which is why medicine is a consultative practice! I like those that know what they don’t know and still seek answers!

I’m getting ready for my RN, just finished my LPN. The amount of stuff you do not learn in nursing is mind blowing. You just got yourself a new follower.
