He saved both hinata and Naruto. It seems light of a sacrifice but actually it was huge. Think about the story. Everyone hated Naruto in the beginning but all changed to choose to protect Naruto even if it wasnt worth it. Neji is a pure symbol of a hero and someone who would sacrifice himself for the person he respects and loves. Hence Hinata being in the way he knew that she could have a future with Naruto.
