I think they thought it gives them some kind of blessing. They do it gently and do it for all. I have seen catholics do this when worshiping certain statues.

Our Monks Here in Southern Part of Thailand taught me to have my palms touch the palms/hands of the statue, and I don’t see wrong with this one. Buddhism is very open minded, I always give merit to the temple if I have something to share, and I am a Filipino and my religion is Catholic 😅
