There’s is this expression in English: “Something didn’t go to plan”. Mapping my German word weight over it, I always assumed it means “oh well, some minor incoveniences” but a guy from England recently told me “no, that means it was a desaster”. Is that true?

I feel like this is because we don’t have the language skills to make our speech interesting in form, so we try to make it more interesting in content. In English, I could probably crack a few jokes but I’d struggle to do the same in another language so I exaggerate instead?
