The chemists got the patents. The forest got nothing. One question before you swipe, and be honest: How many of these 11 plants can you name? Nearly every drug behind a pharmacy counter started as a story someone told a chemist. In the Andes and the Amazon, that someone was a curandero, a hunter, or a grandmother. They explained what the bark did, what the vine did, and what the resin did. The chemist walked out with a molecule, a Latin name, and eventually a patent. The plant and the person who explained it mostly walked out empty-handed. 🧪 Quinine, from cinchona bark, isolated in 1820. Tubocurarine, from a hunting poison, in an operating room by 1942. Crofelemer, from sangre de grado, FDA-approved as a prescription drug in 2012. That last one happened within living memory. Some of you were alive for all of it. And then there are the plants still sitting in the “under investigation” column: Cat’s claw, copaiba, graviola, passionflower, and the ayahuasca vine itself. Studied, extracted, verified, and controlled, while the people who knew it first are still unnamed. This is the part I can’t let go of. The knowledge was never lost. They took it, renamed it, and sold it back to us without the credit line. My new book, THE RAINFOREST HERBAL APOTHECARY, is my attempt to put the credit line back to the plants, the peoples, and the practices. Held together on the same page, the way my grandmother taught me they belong. Book pre-orders are open through Sept 22, along with a new course starting Sept 29 and a Rainforest Collection built from the same forests. 🌺 Mention RAINFOREST 🌺 for the pre-order link at early-bird prices. Now the real question: 🤔 How many more medicines are still “in research” right now, while the people who live, eat, sleep, and breathe these medicines go uncredited?? #curanderismo #rainforest #plantmedicine #indigenouswisdom #animamundi | Deep gratitude to @hayhouseinc @penguinrandomhouse @the.shift.network for making all of this knowledge sharing possible on a global scale.
