I used to teach performance class in Los Angeles and a young man got up one day and played a song. His own song, great song, sang it great, played on the piano great. Yet I sat there the whole time wondering why I wasn’t feeling anything. And then it hit me. I was totally impressed, but I wasn’t moved. So I told him that, I said, “You know, that was very impressive. But for some reason, I wasn’t moved.” And I asked him what the song was about, and he told me, and we did a few exercises. I gave him an intention and a personalization. I had him do it again. And about a third of the way through it, he started crying, cried through the whole song. By the time he was done, the whole class was pretty much crying. And I said, “How’d that feel?” And he said, “It’s the first time I actually realized what I wrote.” And I said, “That’s ‘cause you were present.” And that was incredibly moving. And you know, the funny thing is, it was still impressive. And it was impressive because it was still moving.
