@kristen1942: Unconditional love has no place in romantic relationships and needs to come from within #Love #fyp #consciousness #coherence #spirituality
As a couples therapist, I firmly disagree. Unconditional love +boundaries and criteria

If it is conditional it is not “love”. It is a transaction.

Unconditional love isn’t unconditional tolerance. I love someone unconditionally but I refuse to tolerate disrespect from them which means I don’t have space for them in my life. I radically accept them for who they are and love them deeply. I just simply refuse to negotiate my worth or shift boundaries.

Unconditional love is only meant for children up to a certain age in my opinion

I told my husband I don’t think unconditional love is something two adults can do with each other. He thinks I’m insane but im just being honest. Unconditional love is something I feel for my children.. no matter what they do I’ll love them- not try to change them, and just help guide them along the way. With my husband, I know if he’s abusive or if he continues to project all his unhealed things on me then eventually I’ll leave because of the boundaries I’ve put in place for myself. Just because we’re in a relationship with someone that doesn’t mean we just have to be a doormat

Unconditional love is most commonly found in maternal bonds, though it is not universal.

The only unconditional love is for parents to their children. That’s the covenant. Every other relationship is conditional.

I have never felt the "love" everyone talks about and I've always felt like something was wrong with me. Mine has always been conditional. It's based on how I'm treated and how my relationship makes me treat and see myself.

I think it’s important to distinguish between unconditional love and unconditional relationships. We can love unconditionally, but still have conditions on relationships.

100%. People use “unconditional” love as an excuse to not leave bad relationships or being alone.

I think it’s also not forcing yourself to remain in any dynamic that’s depleting to you, including familial relationships.

A lot of people are looking to romantic relationships and partners for reparenting. Unfortunately, taking responsibility for your reparenting is your job as an individual. It’s unfortunate but many parents didn’t give unconditional love.

Unconditional love is only for children up to certain choices/actions tbh .. like if they’re constantly putting people/themselves in danger then it’s better to sever ties with them

Once you love yourself unconditionally it’s makes entering and exiting relationships easier and a much more enjoyable experience. Expectations become less because you are secure in yourself and do not need validation.

So my theory is there is no such thing as unconditional love. Once you set a condition on love itself.? Isn’t the word unconditional yet another condition in itself?

Hmmm I think the misconception about what unconditional love is has no place in a healthy relationship... but you can have self love and self worth while loving unconditional love. I understand what you mean but its not complete from how I see these things

Your point is the very reason why “romantic love” continues to fail. WE take the love out of it (which is unconditional) and we make it a contract. This perpetuates the cycle. IF We learn to love ourselves unconditional FIRST then we can absolutely extend to others but we are too self centered and paranoid to even try…

Someone needs to start talking about active v. passive love. Love as an energy that we can choose to activate separate from merit. The same way that I can choose to turn on a water faucet and let water flow, even if I'm not thirsty, just to let it flow. Love, gratitude, apology, forgiveness .... allllllll the emotional energies serve us to activate them at will instead of tying their activity to conditions or merit or events . . . 💎
