Yes! I never wanted to work medsurg but it’s really helped me master the basics. My clinical rotations weren’t great so it’s helped me gain more confidence before starting a specialty

Started in critical care. Was almost done with the 3 month (🙄) orientation when I made a non-lethal mistake and was asked how I felt about moving to cardiac tele floor. I’ve been here about 3-4 months now, it’s almost too easy for me now that I started out in ICU. The only downfall is more patients ofc but my coworkers are better & I get an hour lunch 🤷♀️

Med-Surg helps new grads prioritize and organize their care. Although new grads get hired into specialties, Med-Surg is an excellent pathway to learn the basics.

thank you for saying this! i also think it depends on your ratios for your med surg floor. Mine is 5:1 which i think it doable most days unlike some i have heard are 6:1/7:1

I started in med surg and I’m in ICU now! It was such a great foundation for crit care i definitely recommend to new grads so you can gain confidence and clinical skills as a nurse first!!!

I went straight to PICU as a new grad but I LOVED doing clinicals in medsurg because I saw so much and learned sm!! Would def do a pediatric med surg in the future!
