The US does not need Greenland for security reasons. In 1951, Denmark and the US signed a treaty that allowed the US to build bases in Greenland. During the Cold War, thousands of US troops arrived. 17 bases were built. The treaty is still in effect.
After the Cold War, most of the bases were closed and most of the US troops went home. Not because Denmark (or Greenland, which is now part of the treaty) forced them to do so. The US troops went home because America wanted to save money.
If Trump wants to build new bases and send more troops to Greenland, he just has to ask. Although the treaty has been updated, it still allows for a US presence in Greenland if Greenland and Denmark agree. Greenland and Denmark, as good allies, would probably say yes. We have already done that.
Instead of threatening and intimidating allies, Trump would almost certainly achieve what he wants through respectful diplomacy. Even the Russian and Chinese ships that Trump says are “all over” Greenland are not there. In fact, there are relatively few ships of any kind in and around Greenland. The growing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic is taking place in Russian waters—on the other side of the North Pole.

There is no effect of NATO without US. Denmark and countries supporting Denmark would need to form there own alliance and try to manage without the support of US military resources, GPS for once wouldn’t be available.

I doubt that NATO would use US debt as leverage. NATO is a military alliance, not a financial union.

2023 Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA): Establishes a comprehensive framework for U.S. forces operating in Denmark, building on NATO agreements.
1951 Defense of Greenland Agreement: Grants the U.S. extensive military access and rights in Greenland, crucial for Cold War defense and now Pituffik Space Base.

NATO is a defensive alliance.
Greenland is a territory of Denmark.
NATO protects against external enemies, not against its own members. Article 5 would not automatically apply in such a case.

For nato article 5 not relevant for two nato countries. No common vote.
It happens in 1974 when Grece and Turkey both in Nato since 1951 fighted in Chyprus. Nato made nothing.
