@brynn_ann: 1,000-Year-Old Sourdough Starter Part 1 | Mini Series I’m unboxing what’s claimed to be one of the oldest sourdough starters from a monastery in Italy. Is there any truth to this… or is it just really good marketing? I have my thoughts but what do you think? I’m starting a mini series to test it side-by-side with a 1-year-old starter. Sourdough investigations…let’s go! #sourdoughstarter #sourdough #sourdoughbaking #sourdoughbread #homemadebread
Me waiting for my slice of 1000 year old sourdough 👁️👄👁️! 😂

I feel like IF it was truly created 1,000 years ago and maintained from generation to generation that would be very cool to say… however, I personally don’t believe something so tedious as caring for a starter could be maintained by each generation over the last 1,000 years without fail. Now, I also believe that the original start acclimated to its water, flour and environment within that home.. so as it’s moved and transferred and sold it’s no longer the same. Someone once told me it was more about the tradition than literal years, but if that was the case then why not say 1,000 year old tradition, definitely a marketing tactic imo 💖

My thought is, how do we know it’s “1000 years old” 😏

I think it’s 100% marketing. Genius—but marketing for sure.

I’ve used Kensington Market’s 150 yo starter. It made a HUGE difference in my results. Even in a chilly house, I can’t push bulk past 6 hours. It’s that active. We call it the beast.

I got a dehydrated starter off of Etsy and it’s doing great I didn’t know they could send it to you in the liquid form

I always tell people who ask that while the history is definitely cool, a starter is truly only as old as it's last few feeds

I think that it is primarily marketing, but I am really curious if it tastes different or better than your one year-old starter.
