I’m going to say something that might make some people uncomfortable: I’m tired of the idea that autistic kids have to behave perfectly in public to be treated with compassion. A child has a meltdown, cries, yells, drops to the floor, covers their ears, or needs to leave—and suddenly strangers have opinions about the child, the parenting, and what “should” be happening. But when a typical child does the same thing, we’re much more likely to say, “They’re tired,” “They’re overwhelmed,” or “They’re having a moment.” The behavior may look different from child to child, but the need for compassion shouldn’t depend on a diagnosis. And honestly, I think we need to move away from the competitive “autism mom” culture online—the constant comparing, one-upping, and deciding whose experience is more valid. There isn’t one way to parent an autistic child. There isn’t one way an autistic child should look or behave. Sometimes our kids don’t need to be corrected in their hardest moments. They need us to understand them. #autism #autismawareness #autismoftiktok #autismmomlife
