yes this ! if they knew they only had 6 episodes from the jump i feel like they shouldve focused the story more on showing the relational progression bc the emotional leg was lacking tremendously. i shouldnt have to go to book 2 paragraph 12 of the series its based off of to get the context of a scene choice bc the writers just kinda glossed over character growth or an action💔💔

I think the time jumps did most of the leg work in terms of building their connection because if they didn’t have real conversations until like seven or eight years in, I would assume their love for each other was based more on consistency than personality but idk

also in addition to them being different people, I think Shane being Canadian and Ilya Russian (cultural) plays a part to the way they go about situations

Speak on it! Also I've seen people praising the depth of the female characters........that's not what I saw 😬

Hi! I am a political science student from Switzerland and I am conducting a survey for an academic research paper on perceptions of freedom in the United States.
The survey is for academic purposes only, all responses are completely anonymous. It only takes around 5 minutes :)
I would really appreciate it if you could take a moment to participate & send it to other people. Thank you! 😃

Honestly that's how the book is lol. There's not a lot of emotions shown because they're hiding it from themselves. You would probably get what you're looking for by reading the book because a lot of their emotions are in their heads lol

I think the whole scene with Shane‘s parents wasn’t so much of them being shocked that he was gay. It was more of them being shocked that it was with Ilya😭

This series only had 6 episodes because is was created with a Canadian filmmaker grant. They didn’t have to funds lol.

The book was heavy heavy in internal monologue like it's a miracle this director writer somehow managed to make beauty with six episodes at all lol

it technically is a slow burn cuz it was over the time of ten years😭😭😭 but without reading the book it does feel very fast

the many internal monologues in the book did the emotional heavy lifting because you are right they did not say much dialogue wise and I can see how that could be an issue when trying to invest in them

THANK YOU! for mentioning how ilya never apologizes to shane for blowing up at him and ghosting him for six months but shane does apologize for the whole tuna melt/rose situation. no one ever talks about this but are quick to mention how happy they are that shane apologized to ilya 🤯

Such a fun show! Yeah Shane is so sweetie pie and my favorite character but at times I was like yeeshhhh pleaseeee get ur lick back. But I read the second book and it’s a bit more heavy as you get into ilya’s mental. The dialogue is kinda lacking in the book as well so Jacob could do so much I guess but I’m excited to see how season 2 is written in terms of conflict resolution and emotional understanding

Trust me the show did so much for their emotional connection than the book 😭 it's suppose to be like insta-lust and emotional slow burn. And in the book, I was honestly puzzled as to how they even jumped to loving each other because they barely even get to liking each other. The "development" is wholely non-existent and if you are a fan of emotional slow burns, the book doesn't deliver on that front at all 😭. The creator is a major fan of the book and wanted to stick very close to the source material, and when you read the books you realize the weaknesses of the show comes from doing that (not deviating much from the book).

i read the book and I realized the reason why the show was so short is because it was based on a book with 90% internal monologues and so they struggled to find ways to portray their feelings however even then i feel as though their relationship wasnt as in depth even with the monologues and to me i think that's one of the cons. however i do think that they shouldn't have a season 2 because although we don't know ily as relationship to his mom it feels like sort of a stretch to do a whole other 6 episodes on stuff that could've been done in 1.

thank you for saying this because while it’s a beautiful show, a lot of people are praising it for being a healthy display of masculinity and that is simply not true !
