@castlesofscotland: The Shetland Islands by IG/shetlandruthie during snowfall 🌊 Shetland is made up of around 100 islands, 130 miles north of the Scottish mainland. Among those inhabited include Lerwick, the islands’ largest town, and Scalloway. More than 5,000 archaeological sites across Shetland hint at a long history, with evidence of human activity here as far back as 4,320BC. Between 150 and 200AD, brochs were built near the sea across Shetland – hollow stone roundhouses that may have been defensive fortresses. In the ninth century, Shetland was colonised by the Vikings, the start of a long Norse and Scandinavian influence, even after the islands passed to Scotland in the 14th century. Today, the Norse influence can be felt not just in Viking sites like the famous Jarlshof settlement, but in its place names, many of which are derived from Old Norse. Lerwick, for example, means ‘Muddy Bay’, the ‘wick’ not far from the ‘vik’ of Icelandic and Swedish. And Shetland dialect is unique, with outsiders soon picking up words like ‘peerie’ (small) and ‘bruck’ (litter), many of them with Norse origins. Hence, Shetland has its own identity and folk culture. The building featured in this video will be recognisable to fans of the TV series, ‘Shetland’ as Jimmy Perez’s house. Someone says that's depressing? How could anyone be depressed looking over all of that everyday...Sitting in front of a cozy warm fire, brew in hand listening and watching the waves? Absolute bliss ❤️

I am not a Shetlander, but I am a Scot. This is so atmospheric, a wonderfull depiction of a far northern winter.
I adore the sun & the long magical nights we get up here in Scotland
But I am a son of the north, & this type of weather ups my spirits, & makes me feel this is home ❤ 🏴

How hard must those bricks be to take the battering of the sea for all those years 🤔. They certainly don’t make them like these used to 👍
