On this episode of "Today I learned..." 😁 I've never even considered why those were created and for who. They were just a permanent staple of school in the 80s and 90s.

lol love these things! They would shut off the lights and tell you to stay awake and if the teacher was monotone you would be fighting for your life to try and stay awake.

Most of them were probably surplus military equipment, because I've never seen one for sale in an office supply store. Also schools built during the world wars and especially during the Cold war were purposely designed to be easily fortified fighting positions in case of invasion.
