@dariusryankadem: Most transition battles happen when us parents set a boundary, then read the pushback as a threat to our sense of control. It is because of this that we swing hard into strictness, or feel guilty and go permissive and move the line. You shake the ladder to see if it’s stable before you climb it right? You’re not shaking it to break it. The pushback isn’t new information, it is natural friction. So what I did in this situation was this, I decided clearly in my own mind what the agreement is and that it’s final, this stopped me from debating it internally while my child was pushing on it. Then, when the boundary got tested, I defended the edges calmly and sat with the brief discomfort in the moment And lastly, I delivered and did what I said I would do. That’s the difference between a child who cooperates and one who merely complies. Cooperation is a child moving with you because they can make sense of the boundary and still feel some choice inside it. But, Compliance on the other hand, is when we’re applying control from the outside. The pressure, urgency, rewards, removal of privileges, or the child simply not having a realistic option to refuse. This leaves the child adapting to power more than understanding or endorsing the goal. So the question is, “Am I trying to control my child’s behaviour in this moment or am I trying to become the kind of parent whose word is reliable enough that my child can relax into cooperation?” In my upcoming cohort, Tantrum Taming Tactics, I go much deeper into: Emotional regulation, De-escalation in real time and how to actually reduce the frequency and intensity of tantrums over time.
