I get the concern about power, hypocrisy, and later institutional abuse — Scripture itself critiques that. But when people say “Jesus taught something different and it was later changed,” we have to ask: changed from what sources? The earliest records we have — the Gospels and Paul’s letters — already show repentance, obedience, community authority, and worship of Jesus well before Constantine (John 14:15; John 20:28; Philippians 2:9–11). Paul didn’t act independently; his message was affirmed by the Jerusalem apostles (Galatians 2:9), and his letters were already treated as Scripture in the early church (2 Peter 3:15–16). Appealing to a “truer Jesus” while dismissing the earliest witnesses who preserved his teachings isn’t historical neutrality — it’s reinterpretation shaped by modern spirituality. Critiquing abuse is fair; separating Jesus from the apostolic witness that defines him isn’t.
