@bkjojdasya708: We are currently experiencing the 4th mass coral bleaching event, and like countless other reefs worldwide, the corals of the Maldives are bearing the brunt of its impact. 🌊🐢 Coral bleaching occurs when ocean temperatures rise past a tolerable threshold, causing corals to expel the microscopic algae (zooxanthellae) that provide essential nutrients for their survival and give them their colour. Without these algae, corals turn white and struggle to survive. 😢 The loss of these vibrant reef habitats can be catastrophic for the animals that inhabit them, including sea turtles, which rely on healthy reefs for food and shelter. 🪸 Sea turtles, such as the hawksbill and green turtle, depend on the biodiversity of coral reefs for survival. These reefs provide crucial feeding grounds, where both species graze on sponges and algae.
