@2sedaki: The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the tallest church in Croatia and one of Zagreb’s most important historical and cultural landmarks. It was badly damaged in the 22 March 2020 earthquake. The quake caused the top of the south bell tower to collapse and required the damaged upper section of the north tower to be removed in a controlled operation to prevent further danger. The cathedral’s current neoGothic appearance dates mainly from the late 19th century reconstruction by Hermann Bollé, with tall spires, pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and richly detailed stonework that give it a striking vertical presence on Zagreb’s skyline. Since the earthquake, teams of engineers, conservators, and builders have been working on one of the most complex heritage restoration projects in Europe. #zagreb #restauration #EuropeanHeritage #church #croatiatravel
