In the boyband era, you could only pick one boyband as the reigning champion of your teen girl heart. “You must pick a favorite, and despise the other with all of your might” they said. At least that’s how my little teenybopper brain interpreted things back in Y2K. Of course I chose *NSYNC, and hated Backstreet Boys with a fiery passion. In my early 30s I watched the documentary The Boy Band Con - the story of *NSYNC & BSB’s mutual manager Lou Pearlman and how he deliberately created the rivalry: “If Backstreet ends up being a dominant brand like Coke, someone is going to come along and create a Pepsi. We might as well beat them to it." - Lou Pearlman This was the beginning of my personal journey of deconstructing boyband propaganda. I realized I had literally been mind controlled by a con artist and that was a real mind fck for me. But it wasn’t until BSB announced their run at the Sphere last year that the programming really started to crack. Karl grew up in a BSB household and expressed a desire to go. It was then that I began to let the powers of true love heal my hateful heart and purify my soul. I even sent my sister a voice memo (slightly shamelfully) admitting to the transformation that was happening inside of me. “They have unedeniable bops!” she replied. I knew she was right. So I did some exposure tharapy and Karl & I got tix. And the show was frickin awesome. I danced. I was amazed. I made friends with BSB girls. And most of all I finally stopped pretending I don’t know every word to Backstreet Boys songs and freed the lyrics that have lived inside my body since TRL against my will. Ultimately, I healed.
