Physicians (and patients) should also be aware that for girls, the only symptom might be vulvar erythema/irritation. My preschool-aged daughter had persistent redness and her pediatrician thought it was probably from “inadequate wiping” but prescribed an anti fungal just in case. Pinworm never crossed the doc’s mind. A week or so later, my daughter woke up screaming of vulvar pain. With a flashlight in hand, I found a wriggling beast on her URETHRA. Might I add that she had mysterious ear infections of the EXTERNAL type for a while that didn’t resolve with antibiotic drops which made me suspect the damn things had inhabited her ear canals. After pyrantel pamoate AND albendazole, I’m happy to report that her ears and vulva are clear.

I have NEVER had pinworm. I have never known of my friends/friends kids to have them but here we are.. my 7 year old tells me there are worms in his poop 🤦🏻♀️that’s EXACTLY what I need to be dealing with right now. I knew their butts had been itchy and had even been putting some cream on my five-year-olds butt however, I did not notice anything out of the ordinary except for some redness which I chalked up to it being itchy. My kids got the how to correctly wipe spiel so many times in the recent weeks and when they would do the itchy butt dance, I would say “go into the bathroom and wipe right now!” so now that I have been made aware of what I am actually dealing with I kind of sort of feel bad. I will tell you that my seven year-old has been wearing adult diapers the last week because he had started randomly wetting the bed and my five year-old did as well just not as often. I also was questioning if we needed to talk about increasing my seven-year-olds stimulant because of his behaviors that mimic exactly the types of behaviors he does when he is not medicated. So as of today we have all been orally treated and the house has been turned upside down and everybody has been educated. And I will say this is coming from a nurse of 14 years. Who also has her kids wash their hands as soon as they come in the house from anywhere we go, before and after they eat, before bed and when they wake up and before they’re going to touch or help make any sort of food. So now they are washing their hands like normal, but they are also washing every hour because I have set a timer. The house we live in is too big for us and I am the one that is going to have to maintain the whole re-hatching process so they are on strict things right now down to only having a few outfits out (homeschooled) , and their bedsheets are to go directly into the washing machine as soon as they get up. It’s going to be a fun few weeks.
