@moviemomentsofficial: Sideways follows two middle aged friends who take a wine soaked road trip through California’s Santa Ynez Valley as a last hurrah before one of them gets married. Paul Giamatti plays Miles, a depressed, unpublished novelist who obsesses over Pinot Noir as a metaphor for his own bruised ego. Thomas Haden Church plays Jack, a washed up actor looking for validation and one more fling before settling down. What begins as a playful bachelor getaway turns into a messy tangle of affairs, heartbreak and self reflection. Alexander Payne directs with a dry wit and a bittersweet touch that blends comedy and melancholy in equal measure. The film pokes at pretension, midlife insecurity and the fragile performances people put on for others. Its naturalistic dialogue and lived in characters made it an awards season favorite and cemented it as one of the definitive adult comedies of the 2000s.
