He was born in 63 BC with the name Gaius Octavius and was the adopted son of Julius Caesar. After Caesar’s assassination, Augustus defeated his rivals and became the sole ruler of Rome. He ended years of civil war and brought a long period of peace known as the Pax Romana. During his reign, he reorganised the army, improved the administration, and supported arts and culture.
