Women don’t want equal custody because then they may not be entitled to child support. It’s amazing how once a family becomes divorced, it automatically means it now costs $3000 a month to provide basic needs to a child.

Equal custody is not the problem - the legal presumption of equal custody is. It's not stopping moms from divorcing a dad who's just incompetent; rather, the dads who are dangerous. That's a huge problem, as we have studies on the detrimental impact of conflict and violence on children

Its clear- equal custody and not child custody payments significantly reduces divorce. Why- because one of the greatest incentives of leaving, money, is removed. Ultimately, it should be about whats best for the kids and spending half the time with their fathers is nit only fair but also crucial for their development

Equal custody is good. It takes away the financial incentive to take away time from the father. The more time the parent has the more child support. Dads want to spend time with their kids as well.

No, there’s a reason he wasn’t involved with caretaking to begin with. Suddenly giving him more time with the kids won’t automatically make him step up. It just puts the kids in the hands of someone who isn’t keen on caretaking

I’ll all for equal parenting but do your half of the work. Taking them half the time and still expecting the mother to carry majority of the responsibilities (appointments, sport sign ups, bday parties, parent teacher conferences, homework, etc) is selfish.

50/50 should be the norm. The dad can step up and care for the kids even if he didn’t do it while married and so can the mom if the reverse is true. Unless there is abuse or something.

This is completely based on a bias that fathers are not good parents, which is a stereotype that needs to go away. Fathers are not only good parents (on average) but are necessary influences for children to grow up well rounded (just as important as a mother's influence). Of anything, this is true equality in the eyes of the court, and feminist should be excited about such a change. After all, we are working towards equality among men and women, right?

I'm so happy that I work in the irish family courts. joint custody is the norm here. If the child is old enough to have their voice in legal proceedings the courts have to take this in direction making.

During the marriage, the decision was made.He works earns the money.She takes care of the kids.She has decided to change that arrangement at that point.He needs to be given the opportunity to change that arrangement for himself as well.Forcing him to continue the role that he agreed to do when they were together.Is not fair especially if she's deciding to leave
