This video made me realize my family is a matriarchy. I recognized women outnumbered men due to divorce and death, but didn’t connect the dots that how we’ve reorganized is matriarchy. There aren’t men who yell and hurt and abuse anymore. Who disregulate and demand. My grandmother, mother, aunt, sister in law, daughter, and I give in to emotions and softness and only uphold standards and traditions that we enjoy. And the three men around here? They’re here because they uplift and support us, and they contribute to emotional and household labor, but they aren’t in charge of anything. THIS IS SO HEALING.

Internalized misogyny is so difficult to overcome and even sometimes difficult to detect. It’s shameful for me when I identify these things within myself. I’m raising 1 son and 2 daughters and every day I uncover these thoughts and feeling we are programmed to have. I’m trying so hard not to pass them on to my children but it’s very difficult.

As a female I’m amazed at how often people think it’s okay to ask questions about my age, why I’m not married or have kids yet, evoking shame in their reaction. They don’t do the same to men.
