I for one, had to work. if you're not employed by a bank, or a school, or a government entity, you generally don't get this day off.

Also MLK day is supposed to be a day of service (since 1994 anyway), so I personally try to use that day to volunteer.

I am confused mainly because we normally use MLK jr day to learn about him and all the things surrounding the civil rights movement since we are a school at home family. It isn’t a party day, it is a day to remember and to reflect.

Were I grew up in the south, we called any federal holiday that closed the banks, a bank holiday...but it was pretty specific to that area and I don't hear it at all now.

I mean, it is a bank holiday, as in, all banks are closed on federal holiday because the Fed is closed. But their version of what a bank holiday should entail is completely different from ours. Signed, a former bank employee.
