I’m so tired of them rehashing this debate every year. It’s so annoying. Also - 🙋♀️🙋♀️I’ll take book recs!

I read everything, like YA to medical journals and it just depends on what I am craving at the time. It's like food, I can eat at a michelin star restaurant and know it's good but chili-mac really slaps too

I don’t care what people are reading for the most part, as long as they’re reading and comprehending. The literacy rates in the US are abysmal, and most people don’t read even as single book in a year.

Indeed. I fear this “discourse” has been focused on romance and its sub genres specifically since the days of Jane Austen. From a fellow English Lit/Fiction grad. ♥️♥️

I feel like the core of the message is to be honest with your review
Don't give high expectations describing a book as a "masterpiece" just because a casual read gave you feelings

I guess I just don’t understand how one is more accessible than the other. You can get either at Barnes or your local library. Do you mean accessible as in to understand? /gen

I think a lottttt of the people who are professing to be anti genre fiction are actually doing less nuanced analysis and interpretation. They seem to think that something existing in a book is an endorsement of that thing and that they are supposed to always *like* or *relate* to a character to enjoy a book. Like some of us can actually read something and not want to emulate it idk what they’re on about. (For what it’s worth I happily read both)

I mean, it’s all fiction, right? I didn’t realize there was a debate about fiction… I’m also not on booktok …

“Denise at thirty-two was still beautiful, but long hours at the stove had begun to cook her youthful skin into a kind of terra-cotta mask that made Gary a little more anxious each time he saw her.” Franzen is why I stopped reading white men.

I honestly think I read literary fiction the same way romantasy readers read romantasy. 99% of it is just me having fun with my preferred form of entertainment. I was a horror/thriller reader as a kid/teen. My taste has changed with age, but the experience fundamentally similar.

Tale as old as time, really. Then you get the nonfiction vs fiction people.

as a fellow English Major with a creative writing emphasis, I will die on the hill that bashing genre fiction is classist, sexist, and often racist. However, people need to read broadly and frequently step out of their comfort zone.

It’s always against the romance genre which is primarily read by women and it has major undertones of misogyny. Even without booktok there has been and always be snobs towards romance but never James Patterson 🤷🏻♀️

I’m an English (creative writing) girlie myself, and I think discussions like this can actually alienate people from reading altogether. Those of us who know what literary writing is should probably zip it sometimes. We all had a moment when we thought Twilight was a masterpiece before we evolved into other things. Let people enjoy stories and discover a love for reading in their own way. That love is what we all share 😆

let's also forget genre fiction had value in literary academic discussions. it doesn't have to be hyperrealistic depressing b.s to have literary value. I took a combined literature/metaphysics course on Harry Potter ffs.

Thank you! This is what I’ve been saying! Genre fiction and lit fic are not the same, and they are not supposed to be!

Any reading is good. And if we are reading for escapism in this political moment, that’s a good thing! It will keep people from falling into despair or down negative pipelines.

I don't care what other people read in their free time.
I DO CARE about authors not describing what the hell their books are about outside of a list of tropes and those damn chili peppers.

I read historical nonfiction mostly but those are DENSE and interesting. So I sprinkle in some romantasy and self-help-y books because they make me happy. You need variety and the idea that Romance is killing literature when it has propped up book retail since Jane Austen and beyond is ludicrous. Thanks for speaking on this!
